WHS11 resource hog first time I have heard that and never seen it.

Are you running just what came with the N40L 2gb ram?

xpenology used to work brilliantly on my Microserver, but it’s been a while as it made me purchase a Synology.

the thing that put me off a little was keeping it up to date for security.

ive also tried most of the others (freenas, OMV, WHS etc)

with xpenology you have a boot usb drive, and the OS is installed on each of the HDD drives.. the USB doesn’t have any configs .. so you can just write a new image on the flash if it fails and you are up and running again (also means it doesn’t suffer flash wear)
