The tablet was around 2 and a half years old
Warranty comes as part of nationwide flex plus account, £10 a month gives us worldwide travel insurance, European car breakdown cover (for both of our cars), family mobile phone insurance, extended warranty cover (adds an extra year to a one or two year guarantee) and a few other things.  It's not for everyone but we use the travel insurance, breakdown cover, have claimed on phone insurance (for a nexus 5.....actually made money on that one) and now the extended warranty.

So for me, although I've spent £10a month, I've saved a fair bit by cancelling holiday insurance and car breakdown on our cars.

Now just need a worthy tablet to replace the Samsung tab s. Proving much harder than I thought

Another to consider is the Huawei Mediapad M3 8.4.

Decided to try the Amazon fire 8 inch hd tablet. Moved all Amazon apps to folder out of the way and download playstore and Google apps , so far it's ok. Going to give it a few weeks to see how I get in work it before buying a higher end tablet, only £50on prime day so if this works out I will have another 200 for something else.

I didn't know you could get playstore and google apps on there. So once you've done that is the fire basically the same as other Android tablets?

Yep, this link explains how to do it,
How to Install the Google Play Store on the Amazon Fire Tablet or Fire HD 8

It still has  the typical fire tablet, store, books and music etc (see photo, apologies for poor pic)                                                                                   but this allows you to download apps from playstore, including Google keyboard

Quite impressed so far, seems quick, well worth £50.  Giving it a little time before splashing out on a more expensive tablet, have a feeling this will do the job

I'm looking for a tablet to replace my 2010 Motorola XOOM, a 10" tablet which is now rather slow and carries an ancient version of Android OS. Two of the things I value about it, though, are its 64Gb microSD slot and its HDMI output socket, which together let us view movies and tv on a full sized tv screen. I also like the big screen because I read books and write stuff on it. I'd still be using it, but Playstore apps are beginning to fail (Google Maps, Firefox and Kindle for example) because of its old OS, and its WiFi doesn't measure up to our Samsung J3 phone!
Any recommendations for a 9"-10" replacements with these specifics in mind?

I've been wondering what to replace my ageing Nexus 7 2013 with, but haven't found an Android tablet I fancy yet.

Yes my Nexus 10 is showing it's age now. It's rooted with Nougat on it, works well but takes 5mins to load everything up.  Considering Pixel C but it's a lotta pennies.
