India did pretty poorly with a booming economy and population, you'd of expected a better showing.

I don't think this makes any difference. Quality over quantity and all that.

The difference between China and for this particular topic lets say GB and US as they finished finished 3rd and 1st, is that parents are happy for their children to goto the mentioned academies etc at such young ages because they probably don't have a very affluent lifestyle. i.e. go away at 6 to potentially win a medal at the Olympics, and in turn millions in prize money/sponsorships.

If I was severely on the bread line, I'd hand on heart do the same given the opportunity.
