Pointy Guitar Build Thread

Started recording a few clips with the Bich build. Find recording parts of songs can push me to work out the whole thing, well, it works now and again.
                                00:00 Minor Swing (SD Jazz neck humbucker, Pod HD Blackface Dbl Nrm). Yeah, I'm certainly not a jazz player but I do like gypsy jazz music, strongs rhythms and interesting phrasing. Might have to invest in a Manouche gypsy jazz guitar some day.
00:55 Johnny B Goode (neck humbucker split, re-amped with Juicy77 VST). Love re-amping dry signal with VSTs, great way to kill a couple of hours, not interested in tone-matching, but at the same time I'm not going to use a hi-gain Mesa sound for 50s Rock 'N' Roll either. Juicy77 sounds alright for light overdriven sound, has a variety of built-in cab sims too.

That's as far as I got before I had a mini-heart attack when the high e broke. Plan on recording some 60s (Hendrix), 70s (Blue Oyster Cult), 80s (Metallica/Gary Moore), etc, once I put new strings on, ran out of 9s.

Nothing to do with this build but I'll put it here, dual guitar cover of Body Count's Pray For Death. Good metal music in the 90s was pretty scarce but Body Count was something different. Loved Cop Killer and Born Dead, this is the best song of their last album, great driving tune!

Nearly finished the tele build, done 5 coats of shellac sanding sealer, had a bit of sand-through the blue dye.


Touched it up and added 7 more clear coats, still using shellac, easy to work with and drys quickly.



Put a set of 12 gauge strings on to test, reminded me I forgot to do fret dress. Frets seemed level enough but had that scratchy feeling. Took strings off and gave it a light fret level, one low spot on the 14th fret between the D/G strings. Radius is quite flat but added a fall-away to help bends on higher frets.


Restrung again with 10s this time, fret wire is vintage size and thick gauge strings didn't feel right, prefer jumbo frets for heavy strings. Gives me an excuse to look at more guitars for heavy gauge/drop tuning.

Nearly there, whole thing weighs just under 8lbs. Pickups work fine, haven't given it a proper test yet as I forgot string trees (and strap locks), bend the high e and it slips out of the nut slot.... another thing I forgot, file the nut slots to a decent playing level.

Nice playing mate, sounds really good. Wow that e string certainly did go all of a sudden...

Love the guitar looks fab a bit different. wondered about sanding my n2 back and covering in shellac. Do you just brush on?

Thanks, you could brush on shellac, I use cotton cloth, new piece for each coat. It's dry in 20-30 minutes so can build up coats quickly, not a robust finish but looks nice. Spray finishes are nicer but I'm too impatient when it's one step away from putting strings on and testing.
