A delightful film about the life and times of a British soldier through three wars. Livesey is brilliant in the title role (although not named Blimp!) and kudos to the makeup department for the excellent job of aging him over the 40-year span of the story. Kerr, then 22 years old and looking very lovely, has triple roles and is wonderful in each of them. Also good is Walbrook as a German soldier who starts as Livesey's dueling foe but ends up being his best friend. Although it is almost three hours long, it never drags, thanks to a witty and intelligent script. The excellent team of Powell and Pressburger (Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes) is in peak form in its first Technicolor film and the color is absolutely gorgeous.
