A surprisingly relevant and modern film, even more than 50 years after its release, TLADOCB is a sentimental yet cheerful look at the life and times of Clive Candy, British officer. Even though we never actually see him fight (even a dramatic, international duel is cut off before any blood is shed) the courage and stubborness of this "Colonel Blimp" shines through thanks to the brilliant performance of Roger Livesy as Candy. Frankly, I have seen few actors match his performance in this movie. A gentleman in the face of the horrors of war and the trials of time, Candy is a man we can all admire and relate to, however anachronistic he may become. Even when it is implied the Germans have sunk to the depravity of torture (in WWI), Candy is more disgusted than morally indignant: "Well if they are, they're cracking. It's a sure sign. Nobody starts to fight foul until he sees he can't win any other way."
