Another day, another WW2-themed prison camp movie, this one made by the Russians. I actually watched it by mistake, expecting it to be the 1987 version starring Rutger Hauer, but this is gloomier and more digital (so expect the usual sharpness and greyed-out canvas). It's a difficult watch because it's so slow and laboured, content to look at the depravity carried out by the Nazis in scenes which just seem to go on and on; one of the darkest films I've seen, and the least entertaining. If you're watching for the proper prison break stuff, that doesn't happen until the last twenty minutes and even then it's over pretty quickly. It's depressing stuff for sure, and the only notable thing is that former HIGHLANDER star Christopher Lambert makes for an entirely sinister - and sadistic - Nazi officer.
