Road Trips: Routes, Photos and Videos!

Hmmm, this has put a few ideas in my head. We're going to Scotland in 2 weeks time (only to Dumfries and Galloway) but have a week with nothing planned, so I may have to do consider doing something like this!

The drive there will be OK, but we will have the dog in the boot and roof racks/box attached.

I love driving, Adrian.

I bought a BMW in 2011 which nearly killed the passion as it was an old example (Y reg, E46 316i), hugely unreliable. Have gone back to a fully loaded ford focus now which is much more fun to drive. Doesn't have that "feel" the BMW had, though.

I drive every day from Boston in Lincolnshire to Peterborough for work, so I clock up a few few miles every month, but I still on my days off wish I could justify going out for a drive. I don't have to drive fast to get the pleasure from it, either!

I'll look over the route and try to share some ideas on here, perhaps.

Just checked the weather for tomorrow and well... it doesn't look good. All day of rain in that region. Friday and Sunday are OK though, just the Saturday

I can't wait to revisit Scotland, my wife and I did a road trip 3 years ago. Since then we've had a baby though so are waiting until next year to go again.

We did Loch Lomond, A82 to Fort William and stayed there a few days. From there we did the A830? to Mallaig, what a lovely road. We even saw the Harry Potter train pass over! It had been raining and there were some fantastic waterfalls coming off the hills. We then carried on the A82 to Loch Ness and Inverness, and came home via the A9 which was a mistake, what a boring, long road.

Whenever my dad talks about his youth and road trips across Scotland he talks about deserted single track roads.  I guess those days are over?

You can still find very quiet roads in Scotland, but there has been a massive rise in traffic over the years, same as everywhere else.
Roads that used to quiet on a Sunday morning aren't any more, for example.
The UK has officially the most crowded roads in Europe, that is bound to spill over into Scottish back roads too.

From what I read on various driving forums, those are The best driving roads in the whole of UK. Twisty, relatively quiet and stunning views.

Sadly too far for me to visit in one day. If not this year, definitely the next I plan to go there for 2-3 days.
