I took about 2k in cash, now looking for an ATM that will take either a U.K./US visa or a Qatar MasterCard no luck so far although I have only tried to ATMs and then noticed it was the same bank.

20 plus courses, best sushi I have ever had, although it is literally in my top 3 on price worldwide, around $360 with drinks per person.

Try 7-11 ATMs (in most 7-11 convenience stores) - no extra fees, and can even switch the display into English.  Daily limit is ~£500.  I lived in Tokyo for over a year and never had any issues getting cash out.

You really don't have to.   Things have moved forward fairly quickly in Japan in the last year or two - in my opinion partly because of the popularity of apple pay   Suica (bit like Oyster card in London, but used for everything), and partly because of the upcoming olympics.

Sure, there are still places in Japan that won't accept foreign cards, so it's always a good idea to carry at least some cash with you (from the 7-11s mentioned earlier for example!) but VISA and mastercard are pretty widely accepted now.

Also if it helps anyone, Halifax Clarity card is absolutely brilliant for travel, as there are no fees at all, and the exchange rate is pretty much at BoE level.
