American Pastoral by Philip Roth

Finally getting round to it, I'm over half way through this one and although it's a bit of a slog at times this tale of 'Swede' Levov is brilliantly executed. It moves at a very slow pace, with long scenes and what I'd describe as a ruminative and/or pitying narrative but it's focus can incite can be both poignant and penetrative. It's also about the Jewish experience in America (hence American Pastoral the condition to which the Swede adheres) I've got a fair bit to go but hopefully I'll have it finished by the end of the weekend as I've just ordered a couple of new books to read.

This book was gripping.  I couldn't put it down and placed my Kindle next to my laptop in the office so I could read it surreptitiously.

I finished it yesterday.

A friend has recommended The House Beyond the Hill by Michael R. Collings.  Not sure if I will like this.  Just read two pages and it's about vampires and werewolves.  Not really my usual material, but as it was recommended, I will try it out.

Not sure it's the kind of book I'd want to read, ukbootlegs... sounds too harrowing for me!

Currently reading John Periam's Shelley the Lifeboat Labrador, which was one of those short-time freebies on Kindle and appealed as it was about Southwold (although only in part of the book so far). I don't usually read books where pets are the main component but this isn't so much about the dog as about John's life from when he moved to Southwold and then became involved with the lifeboat and the RLNI and it's very interesting to read.

Also reading an old library copy of J.D. Summers-Smith's New Naturalist book on The House Sparrow... though not a book that's likely to have a wide readership. Am learning new things from it though, hoping it'll give me a little more understanding about how the colony in my garden behave and maybe if there's anything my garden is lacking for them.

I just fished it last night. My commute is so much llonger now so i read this in just over a week. I found the style of writing a bit highschoolish at first but then i really got into it and really enjoyed it. I think i'll buy the next two for my kindle since they are quite cheap in the kindle store.

Well I enjoyed Crooked House a lot. Well written but the identity of the murderer seemed very obvious. Not sure if this is just me reading it with a more cynical eye 60  years after publication or if it has always been so.

Anyway, next book is PG Wodehouse, Galahad at Blandings where everything will seem very obvious (but entertaining none the less)!

Not sure if enjoyable is the right word for it, but it was a gripping book.  It was amazing to read how a "white, middle class, English woman" ended up having sex with upto 34 men in a night for £20 a time.

It was shocking and you can't help but feel for her.

I got the book for free, so I donated money to the charity she works with to make up for it as a result.
