Rather, shouldn’t Trump be asking Khan for advice on how to lower violent crime?

Although Trump does  criticise the mayor of New York even though  violent crime is relatively low there compare to the rest of the states.

So for the people who just seem to completely dislike Khan in this thread, I'm curious on your thoughts on the wider debate, if that's even possible.

What are your thoughts on the austerity cuts that had been imposed by the government? Do you think they had no impact? Little impact? Genuinely curious, because you seem laser-focused on Khan to the exclusion of all other discussion.

For instance...

How about we rephrase this - do you think it's acceptable that such a long time was taken to provide the funds? Do you think the funds should have even been granted? What are your thoughts on the "Glasgow" initiative?

Other than Islamic fundamental terrorism, what other form of terrorism has happened in the UK in the last 5 years?

There is nothing wrong with looking at how Glasgow tackled knife crime. However, it was a long term plan and maybe after 10years you will see returns. There is also a big difference in the reasons for the homicide rates in Glasgow and London. In Glasgow much of it was related to alcohol. That is not the primary cause in London.

What would you say is the primary cause?

Or a similar question, if the funds had been provided 13 months earlier, would lives have been saved?

The first thing to do is make sure young people, some as young as 10, are not carrying knives.
This is an interesting report from CNN.

Agreed - that is an interesting piece and I agree with much of what it says - that a re-educating and re-introducing support for at-risk kids is paramount. I've seen some great articles on similar efforts and they make a huge difference - not just in London.  But they are tragically few and far between.

However, the article does point out that austerity is a key cause - stripping back some of those very things the article discusses that actually made a difference (police included).

The point a lot of us are making is that the impact of austerity - in this specific area - is one that's only really starting to rear its head now. It's easy to blame the "man in charge" but sometimes you do need to look further.

The article from the police officer posted by @springtide is also very sobering - and helps to illustrate how strain on resource other than police numbers on the street can have a huge impact.

That's because Drumpf probably has the support of those states, he doesn't in New York.
