That depends on how you define success. The split prompted the Labour rump to (eventually) deal with Militant and evolve into something that embodied the values of the SDP rather more than it did the values it embodied at the time of the split. That in turn led to the only Labour election wins of the last forty five years.

Do I see political fame and fortune for the seven? No. Do I think what they are doing will have an effect? Yes.

They grouped together to leave the labour party and form another group,so at no point in time have they shown any independece...Not being affiliated to a party but forming a group is hardly showing independence imho..
Chuka Umunna has said himself that he hopes a new party will be created by the end of the year,,, i can really feel the independence oozing out of him
Just shows a lack of real conviction if you ask me,,if you don't agree with the party just leave don't try to find people to hold your hand

The real issue that unites them could be done and dusted before they get the party of the ground..
I can understand the possibility of impact,their frustrations of the Labour party etc but if they would refer to themselves as Independent of the Labour party group it would be fairer

Eh? The 2015 election was won- albeit narrowly- by the Conservatives.

Yep that's the one election in the last 26 years (prior to that, Major 27 years ago ... just one win 23 years later, frittered away 2 years after that). No landslides since 1987.

It's looking increasing like they'll be no Labour election win for 26 years either, they way they're going

Maybe we should just have 20 year terms.

Governments could then think more long term instead of knee jerk, short term policies.

20 year terms ? That's an open invitation for wannabe dictators and corruption to take hold.
5 year terms are about right. Long term planning ? No point to that when you have MP's on all sides (with a few exceptions) who are more interested in the office they hold rather than doing what's right for the country.
