Working at Amazon

I don't disagree at all, but I do also appreciate what the job actually is and entails. Nobody is saying that they don't treat people with respect, nor that they shouldn't. But ultimately it is a low skilled job where throughput of units counts. And anyone can't handle that then maybe it is not for them. It is just a bit of graft. And no I never worked at Amazon myself, as I said earlier my daughter (16) applied and got an offer of £11.70/hour which isn't bad at all in my opinion. But in my time I've had my fair amount of jobs where it was a car of head down and just get on with it. That doesn't mean anyone is treating anyone as if its a victorian workhouse.

Just a figure of speech. Can I ask was your daughter quoted this for shift work. Contis or D/A/Ns.

No idea what the latter two mean. She told me it was part time shift work. She hasn't accepted it though, as she prefers a job at the skate park and at the stables. Both were around £7'ish but according to her more fun. The job at the stables she has been doing for many years, they just weren't allowed to pay her previously due to the number of hours she worked there. Silly system in my opinion but I understand why they put it in place.

I dont disagree with any of that but I still dont see what changes you are suggesting should happen that would have no cost to Amazon.

Thread observation, not aimed at anyone in particular;

Brexit thread - We need to leave the EU to protect our low skilled, low paid, workers from immigrants pushing down their wages and taking their jobs. It might not affect you but we’re looking out for the low paid workers.

Amazon thread - It’s a factory, why should the low skilled, low paid, UK workers get better conditions?  They should be grateful to have a job and get another one if they’re not happy. It’s not as if they can’t be replaced.

Context is everything I suppose, but it’s an interesting comparison, depending on what the focus is.

I'm just for letting the market find the value. When there are less Human Resources available organisations will have to approach it differently to either make their organisation more attractive to join, or find another way to overcome the situation. Either way is a win from my perspective.

And to me Brexit was about controlled migration, it may still be required as when wages get pushed up to high nobody wins as it will be the consumers paying for it.

Why do you think the 2 are not complimentary?. If you leave the EU and its unlimited labor supply, then Amazon would have to improve its T&C's to attract and keep staff in a more competitive market for labor - exactly what Werewolfs was asking for.

Big business isn't in favor of EU membership for your benefit.

Why do you assume they are UK workers?

I’m not talking about big businesses, I was talking about posters on here who show concern for low paid workers in the Brexit thread and a more blunt “like it or leave it” approach in this one
