Was this really necessary?

Well, OK, I know a lot of sequels to movies aren't "necessary." But while the first movie was good although not great, I realllly don't see a need to grind out a sequel for it. Were any new concepts introduced? Any questions answered that were left unanswered from the first movie? It would be like trying to do a sequel of "Donnie Darko" with all new characters. What would be the point?

...Well I need a few more lines of text before I can submit this so I guess I will propose the question of.... what other sequels out there do you find entirely unnecessary? Or its flip-side, what sequels have surpassed the originals in quality? I can think of 2 right off hand... Terminator 2 and Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. I am sure there are plenty more opinions out there.
