So the apparent fails:
- Single card slot
- Battery life
- No Eye AF and missing most of Nikon's class leading AF functionality
- 5.5 fps if you actually want to see what you're shooting on the Z7, hopefully the Z6 is a bit better
Really difficult to see who would opt for the Z7 over the D850.
Z6 with the 24-70/4 over the D750 for someone who wants something light and full frame is maybe a better bet given the D750 is getting a bit long in the tooth now.
A big song and dance made and for me at least a huge disappointment and missed opportunity. Main flaws:-
1) One card slot.
2) Needs repeating, one card slot
3) AF system doesn't have the features of their current DSLRs (3D tracking, dynamic AF options etc)
4) Poor battery life, just over 300 shots when the current Sonys get over 1000
5) 5.5fps if you want real time view and exposure changes. Seriously, 5.5fps for a £3.5k camera
6) Did I mention the one card slot
Still no mention of weather sealing yet either.
Yes I get for some these things aren't a big deal, and after all we're talking real 1st world problems here But the Z7 is a £3.5k camera, surely it should be on par with the current market at least? What are you paying for here? The D750 is less than half the price and beats it in every way (barring the resolution).
It certainly doesn't appeal to me at all. I can't think of a single reason why I'd switch, let alone someone with a D850 that beats it hands down.
Really poor after all the teasing that's gone on. Can't help but feel they've rushed this, and it risks them losing more customers to Sony who would have been waiting for this.
Brand loyalty aside, this could be a sales disaster.
It really depends on your faith in Nikon I think and views on where the market is going.
This should be the future. As EVFs improve it simply doesn't make sense to keep the mirrors - so to some extent its the same position with film vs digital in that Z mount should end up as the only option.
But its a question of how quickly that is going to come and how quickly (/if) Nikon is going to iterate.
Unless you do a lot of video - I can't see why someone would swap a D750 or D850 for one of these (though it could make a nice lighter weight holiday camera to replace snerkler's EM1 if it weren't for the cost).
OTOH if you're buying a new camera because of need / want - I can see the argument for hobbyists that picking up DSLR glass is potentially a waste and there is some advantage to biting the bullet and going for mirrorless now. Keep on with your old glass but going forwards look to get the new glass that is made for the camera you will want to own down the line rather than the DSLRs that are available now. If I currently owned a Nikon crop camera (or an older full frame) and had a decent amount of glass I could be tempted as a hobbyist to go for one of these over the D750/850.
But can you count on a company like Nikon to produce the Z7II that fixes the niggles in 2 years' time? Or are we looking at a more traditional cycle for these? What if Z mount simply doesn't take off? And given the costs does it even make sense anyway given where the lens lineup is now? If you're actually cost conscious isn't the answer a D750 now and then the Z6/7II in a few years?
I’m pretty locked into Canon with a lot of glass that I really like. If anyone from Canon is reading this please can we have a FF mirrorless with all the tech advantages plus uses our existing glass as native?
What worries me with Nikon is that they seem happy to release these cameras. Surely they know they’re under par so rather than rushing why not wait until they’ve cracked it? Why should early adopters be beta testers for them? Obviously the next gen cameras will be better, maybe even on par with the current market, why not wait until then?
