If you are using a wired timer 30sec exposures with a nice high ISO should be clean enough. Just a case of firing off a test shot and seeing what you have. Shoot in RAW if you can. Probably best to download a trial of adobe CC for the rendering. It would last a month. Plenty of time to do your editing and rendering.

Thanks for the tips.

I read something a while ago about the “500 rule” for trying to shoot space, I.e. you would times your focal length ( multiplied by sensor crop ) so on my 10mm lens I would be 500 / ( 10 * 1.6 ) = 31.2

So exposure time would be 31.2 secs, although the nearest my 550D would do would be 30 without using bulb mode.

I guess it shall be a case of trial and error but I shall certainly try out your suggestions

Yes exactly. Thats why I went with 30secs. I'd say that the sharpness at 30secs is perfectly acceptable for time-lapse.

I am hoping the f4.0 of the lens will cut it, but at ISO3200 @ 30 secs we will be able to cut it

hmmm. Not sure about that tbh. You don't have any f/2.8 lenses available?

The problem with a 50mm is it just isn't wide enough for epic rolling skies. Something like a Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 would be perfect.

I do have the cheap canon nifty fifty f1.8 but exposure time would be about 6 - 7 seconds which I don’t think would be long enough
