I don't have the technical knowledge to guess at what might be causing it. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed in software?

Looks like it's a fundamental flaw of sensors with masked phase detect sensors so will be apparent with most of the A7 range then. I'm guessing it's a bit like the D750 flare issue that in the real world most of us are unlikely to see it. Still, not a great artefact that

Not really used it much in anger but I had a lot of fun doing a zoo tour with Wild Arena using the Tamron 100-400 on my A9.  Not used the camera a massive amount and only time I've used the lens so there were definitely problems on my part.  I think the lens / camera combo held up okay though and I got some shots I was very happy with (given it was a miserable day so not exactly ideal).

Certainly there is one of the posters over on DPR who is quite happy using his 400mm Canon prime on an A7Riii for BIF - so I wouldn't entirely rule out adapting given how good the top end Sonys are getting at it now (though arguably better with Canon glass rather than Nikon I think which doesn't entirely solve the cost issue for you...).

And the portability thing is definitely there depending on what sacrifices you're happy to make on lenses.  In no way an apples to apples comparison but my A9 with the 28 or 85 prime is a way smaller package than when I was toting around an 80D with the 18-135.

TBH have been looking at the A7R III and 24-70mm f4 combo for travel which would 'replace' my EM1 with 12-40mm f2.8. Not 'that' much weight difference and I can ramp up the ISO on the Sony to compensate for the f4 vs f2.8.

I'm guessing Sigma think the Art lenses are the most desirable at the moment, they seem to get great reviews for the image quality and praise for the price.

Just having a look at the lenses, it's good to see there's an affordable 50mm F1.8 and the 28mm F2 looks not bad either although shame it's not a bit wider.

Yes, the 28/2 is very nice and fairly cheap - similarly the 85/1.8 is a decent compact lens at a reasonable price.  That is my 2 lens kit for now along with some adapted Canon stuff.

So there are decent, reasonably priced fast primes available.  There will definitely be a vocal group very excited about the better rendering from the Art series who are happy to take the weight hit and save some money vs the GM / Zeiss glass.

But I feel that the lineup is missing a decent affordable option on the zoom side more than its missing large heavy primes.  Currently as a normal zoom its the kit 28-70 for £400, a mediocre 24-70/4 for £830 (soft corners at the short and long end regardless of aperture), a good 24-105/4 for £1200 or the GM at £2,300.  The Sigma Art f4 and f2.8 at literally half the price of the Sony equivalents would have been interesting.  

Though I think they're each about 200g heavier than the equivalent Sony even in Canon fit so maybe my back will thank me for spending a little more.  Probably going to end up with a second hand 24-70/4 for now given I need something this month and the 24-105 is still at the launch premium.

Seems to be a very minor "problem", one reviewer took over 4,500 images including some back lit portraits and wasn't able to replicate the issue. Probably just a freak occurrence in the DPReview gallery so sounds like a red herring.

Shaping up to be a fantastic option.

It is a storm in a teacup for sure, and the actual chance of seeing it will be very rare. However, more examples are coming out and it seems to affect the whole A7 range and A9, which is not surprising as it's the masked PDAF that's causing it.

TBH I'd be more concerned about the banding with the electronic shutter which is why the A9 baffles me that it only shoots 5fps with mechanical shutter. No such woes with the A7iii though, 10fps isn't it? I think it's going to be a big seller. I'm sure we'll see more examples of this pin striping but I doubt most users will ever see it. And even if they did it's likely to be less than 0.01% of the time
