As per Toko Black’s post above, he describes the exact circles I’m refering to.The term ‘snob’ is used in the U.K. to describe someone who carries an air of importance over others through their actions/how they treat others/how they speak.You’ve already said how you (rightly) believe that asking someone how much they earn isn’t really done but many people will start a conversation with their salaries/where they holiday/how large their house is etc.Those are the kind of circles I wouldn’t want anything to do with.

But what you are describing is a type of person, a vulgar unpleasant person in my opinion. Why do you think that is linked to a certain class? And especially so considering you don’t class yourself part of that and don’t want to be part of that.
To me that comes across as very prejudiced. There are vulgar unpleasant people in all walks of life, right across the range of the categorisations nabby highlighted earlier. Yes you are born with nothing but your family already has a standing.That is, people are born into privilege, born into a “good family name”, born into poverty, born into “working class”.
When I said that nobody looked downwards, I mean that those deemed at “the top” don’t see that there are people who don’t live by the same means as themselves or have the options to make the same choices.

I think that is a gross generalisation, those kind of people exists at all levels in the class system.
For example there was a great TV show about it, Hyacinth Bouquet. It’s a human trait, not a class trait in my opinion.

It just takes hard work to trace back your ancestors,,my uncle did ours years ago and spent years checking records,,traveling around churches etc...One problem he mentioned was that a lot of peoples surnames come from their profession ie Smith,Wright,Cooper,Webb etc or where they lived....
Back in the 1600's the population was 4-5 million so we certainly come from a more limited pool than now
