I recently got the list of cars to choose for my next company vehicle and there's not one Petrol option. I guess the news hasn't gotten through to our company, or they simply don't think it's relevant for the next 3 yrs.

Our company car list has a few 1.4 petrol options.  These seem to compare quite well with diesel engines that are a little larger.  A few guys that have them already say they prefer the quiet engine over a diesel and the performance is negligible.  One guy did tell me he preferred the engine breaking you get with a diesel - apparently he has to use the brakes more in the 1.4 petrol!

Problem for me is that I am likely to keep it for 5 years and that is a long time!

Have you not tried out the new breed of TSI engines?  Some of the cars in the VW stable offer phenomenal performance from 1.4 cc motor combined with great fuel economy.

Have a look at some alternatives - Top 10 petrol cars to buy instead of a diesel

I've kept my present one 10 years from new.   Outlay has been virtually nil apart from tyres and servicing.

Any reason not to hang onto it a bit longer?

The 1.4 is under powered in the Golf and the 1.8 is the GTI
My last one I kept for 8 years. I kinda regret selling it now.
I sold it last Saturday...
I was convinced on the GTD until I read this thread...

Yes I know, I just just wondering whether Faust had considered hanging on to his until we are sure what HMG's policy is going to be, although the writing does seem to be on the wall.  I was happy to buy a 9 year old diesel as a towcar earlier in the year, on the grounds that by the time it becomes uneconomical to run, due to road tax or diesel tax I can probably afford to scrap it. Or of course if it becomes impossible to get anywhere due to congestion charges/diesel car bans.

I'm still running my plasma TV quite happily even though they don't make them any more.  I don't know what I'd do if it needs re-gassing though
