Would you buy another diesel?

VW has recently commissioned a state of the art hybrid and electric vehicle facility. They have also committed to phasing out diesel production over quite a short period.

The old ones are the best, both jokes and TV's. I can't bring myself to replace our 435xde. Every time I see an advert for a new telly I think, wow, that looks brilliant. Then it hits me!!!

Back on topic, I've run an SQ5 for the last 3 years and have spent 6 months pondering the same question. I don't think I can but another diesel SUV, yet the choice of rapid petrol versions is limited. I think, at the moment, the proposed plug-in petrol hybrid F-pace is the most likely replacement, unless Audi produce a V6 petrol RSQ5 as rumoured. There's definitely been a lag between the announcements by various cities and governments worldwide and a response from car manufacturers. To a certain extent I feel they were as surprised as us. Despite that, I'll still miss the massive torque of a diesel, 650Nm in the SQ5, not to mention 36mpg from a tank.

The DPF is also a concern for me. Got a mate who has had a nightmare with his and has spent a small fortune getting it sorted.  The diesels i'm looking at start from about 80k and with the life of a DPF apparently around 100k, if it hasn't gone kaput before then, I could be looking at a rather large bill. There's also the DMF to factor into it.

Similar but over a longer period. I run my cars into the ground or uneconomical repair before replacing. By the time i'd be ready to change it I might not be allowed to move it off the drive without penalty

Mine is 10 years old and with 155k on it it needs money spending on it. The turbo is making a noise which my mechanic bud says needs replacing before it packs up and could take the engine out. The back discs aren't far off needing replacing. The DMF is still the original so could be a large bill at some point. No DPF on my car, a 1.8 TDCI, so that's a plus point.

Deciding what to do when changing car has never been such a difficult decision.

VW have said there will be a Mk8 GTD, possibly the last incarnation. The current Mk7.5 is a brilliant little car. Not looking at the economy just enjoying driving it. No Adblue needed which is a bonus.

Ive got a 1.2 turbo petrol (pug 308) hire car for work and economy is crap compared to a 1.6 diesel (hyundai i30) (last hire car i had).

Looking at replacing our own car (1.2 petrol polo) with a 2nd hand zafira or similar and looking at diesel. Hoping that by the time we need to replace we've got our moneys worth and before regs, charges come into play fully so we can then go to a hybrid EV.

I was sold on it completely until this thread! Still live the car but worried about selling it down the line or diesel taxes making pointless buying it over a petrol model.
I do 12k miles a year (minimum) so borderline on where they say it could still be worth sticking with diesel.
Now looking at the 2.0 cooper s.
