Why?  My children have birth certificates to prove they were born here to British parents. I can prove I was born to British parents. I don't have a current passport either.  Why would they need a passport?

I don't get it - what has a passport to do with tuition fees?

I think the point was, in regards to the passport, that it is free only for British Citizens. Personally I think that would be very unfair as that doesn't include any other tax paying resident. Yet it include many non tax paying British Citizens who don't even live her. It is approximately £13.1M additional people to put that in perspective...

Indeed, but my point was the same as IG's, why, specifically, a passport?

What I find fascinating to see in this thread is that many of us have been conditioned to want to increase taxes...Why do we think that is normal? Why do we desire more administration over ourselves and are happy to pay for that? Why happened to our psychy to want a larger government?

My wish list, but will never happen.

A royal commission to review simplification of personal taxes. All of them.

Income tax, nic, council tax, inheritance tax, car licensing, capital gains, VAT, duties on alcohol / cigarettes / fuel, etc.

Including a serious investigation of using a land value tax.

Make it cross party too.

Will never happen though.

Resident and citizen are not the same thing, mixing them up can lead to confusion.

It is common practice to obtain a residency visa and then once settled down in the UK apply for British citizenship.
