Hi, did you find something that met your needs?

As I'm looking to purchase an LED bulb which scatters light omni-directionally for an E27 fitting in the living room, as a replacement for one of these Megaman globes (this is rated at 798 lumens but I wouldn't mind a slightly brighter lamp):

MEGAMAN® | GLOBE series (GSU415) - CFL - Products | CFL Lighting, Low Energy Light Bulbs, Energy-saving Lamps

This Philips bulb seems to meet my requirements and has good reviews but is a tad more expensive than I am hoping to spend

Philips Master LED Bulb 13W (75W Replacement) Dimmable, Warm White, E27 Edison Screw: Amazon.co.uk: Lighting

plus it has apparently has been replaced by this newer model, although reviews are thin on the ground and in the additional information it states that this product has been available since 2012

There are Megaman LED E27 lamps that have a significantly higher output although they are not cheaper than the Philips lamp:

Megaman 16.5W Non-Dimmable Opal Classic LED GLS - Warm White (ES/E27)

I've not used this particular lamp, but have most type of Megaman dimmable lamps installed at home and am happy with their performance.

Some 90% of my lights are now LED and all cool white (6000-6500k) and I love them. I started in 2010 when I had a new kitchen when they were much more expensive and had lower output.

I've just replace 10 GU10s in the kitchen with these, which are fantastic output and value!!!

My electrician managed to get me the above for £6 each - even better!

I would recommend trying out one of the 300 bulb 5M strips in the bathroom.  With 12V safety shouldn't be a problem and you can buy them direct from the far east for a few quid including postage.  Then, before you wire them in permanently you can run them off a battery holder containing 8 X 1.5V alkalines (if they are of the 3*** type) while you decide if and where you want them.  (The biggest problem with this scheme is the four to six week delay in postage, typically, from e-bay sellers, but the price more than makes up for it).

I have to confess to having these things all over the place now.  Some in the garden running off a battery connected to a 5W solar panel, via a voltage controller (6 euros inc p&p from my favourite auction site), in the house, running off a 2 euro 12V power supply and have ordered a couple of 12V remote controllers so that I can set them up outside the garage etc.  To say I am pleased with them is a bit of an understatement.  They are so versatile!

We tried replacing the R63 spotlights in our kitchen with LED screw ins with the correct screw and found that the lighting was so bad I felt I couldn't see properly - might have been o.k. had the ceiling been about 3 feet lower.   When we tried to change back to the R63's NONE of them would work - any ideas as to what has caused the problem.  We did have two operational R63's when we put LED's in but those have now gone.

You may find that the LED lamps are slightly longer than your standard lamps so have compressed the metal strip at the base of the lamp fitting so that is no longer reaches the tip of the standard lamps. I've had a similar issue when swapping lamps on screw fittings, but normally you can use a set of needle nosed pliers to re-adjust the metal strip in the lamp holder but do turn off the power before trying this!

Looking to get some decent wide angle cool white GU10's for the kitchen, what the current thoughts on decent bulbs? Saw some megaman ones but at over £20 a pair its a bit pricey!

The Megaman lamps are expensive, but are fully dimmable with the correct dimmer switch, and you also get a 5 year guarantee providing you keep the original sales invoice safe and register online for the extended warranty.

If you don't want/need dimming then you have a far wider choice of lamps, so look back through the more recent posts to see what others have been using successfully. If you are replacing many lamps you might want to get a sample to test first and make sure if meets your expectations.
