If it has a use by date then I'll go a day or two past that, providing it still looks ok. Best before is another matter, I'm not bothered if it's days/weeks/months past date as long as it still looks ok.

There are plenty of places selling out of date food so it's hardly as if it's dangerous, it's just a case of being sensible.

Loose food (carrots for example) don't have any dates on at all. So, we have to use our judgement.
And I bet people generally don't know how old food is in their freezers. And if you eat out, you have no idea at all. So we probably all eat out of 'date' food without realising.

Hate wasting food. Milk would be the only one I would be iffy about. If it was past the sell by date and smelt OK then its good enough for me.

Made a bacon sandwich last weekend and ask the Mrs if we had any HP sauce. She dug a bottle out of the cupboard and the best before was in Feb 2013. Goes to show how often we buy sauce.

Needless to say it was used, sandwich tasted awesome and the HP sauce went back in the cupboard until the next time.

Ketchup or mayo is the way to go.

Sorry my friend but HP sauce all the way.

Ketchup, yeah OK if there is no HP.

Mayo, never tried it but will.

For mayo, you need the bacon cold. Plus add peanut butter and cranberry sauce for the very best sandwich ever.
