HTC Vive VR Headset for Steam

The thing that worries me about this is VR in general was originally pitched as something that's affordable that anybody can get into for £200 - £300.  From speaking to people about the Vive, this is looking more like something that's going to be £1000 - £1500 and require a decent setup to have it all running right.

Much as I want to get one of these.... really badly, I dont think I could warrant that much.

Where do you get £1000  from?  Can't really see them selling it for that as they'll be competing with the Oculus no?

A couple of us spoke to some of the Reps at Eurogamer, they weren't providing specifics, that's the kind of price range they were hinting at.  

All honesty mate, I'm really hoping they've got it wrong and its somewhere in the £300 - £500 range with all the bits you need.

One cool thing, the other thing they mentioned was HTC are wanting to get this out to market before the Rift.. This year was mentioned.

£300 to £500 is what I'm expecting. Anymore than that and I'll hold fire to see what Oculus can offer.

I could well be wrong (often am) but I am beginning to think this is going to be delayed (much like previous steam hardware - steam box in 2014???? yeah right!)

Surely if it was on schedule the final consumer product would have to be in manufacture now, and therefore valve/HTC would have shown it off by now...... either that or the current dev kit IS the final design of course, in which case the rift CV1 is WAY better designed in terms of ergonomics.

I am beginning to think no one will be getting a final release one this side of xmas, and they will not be in full release until spring next year, essentially losing any time advantage over the rift.

Yeah I've drifted back to Rift anyway - as none of the racing games have even hinted at Vive support. Assetto Corsa has not confirmed work to support 0.7, Project CARS supports 0.7 and general consensus on the rFactor2 forums is that support will come with the release of CV1.

I suspect anything on Steam with an interest in VR will support the Vive. Valve have sent the key developers hardware already and they are very good at offering help for free behind the scenes to ensure Steam stays the PC gaming home. Valve know full well that content is key and can exploit established working relationships with content creators that Oculus / Facebook just can't.

So long as its priced sensibly
