The article states it affect 482000 cars.
Millions did seem unlikely to me, given that the USA still prefers petrol cars to diesels by a huge margin.

A/ They don't sell that many diesels in the USA anyway.
B/ Do you think Americans, in general, give a fig about emissions?

It's not a safety issue, per se.
It's something the majority of USA people just aren't going to care about.

There's more to diesels than the car world too.
Think of all the marine diesels out there.
Even the most up-to-date cargo vessels (Emma Maersk) still use a diesel engine.
Don't you think the makers of that vessel looked ahead and considered alternatives, given the projected life of such a hugely expensive vessel?
Long way to go before the end of the diesel engine.
