I suppose every cloud has a silver lining. At the end of my lease I could offer Audi a very generous 25% of the  original balloon payment. Don't know yet if my 177 engine has been fiddled with, if it has could I reject the fix which would probably drop power to 140 (legally Audi still own it). I really like the car and may even pay that final amount.

If everyone who has a new VAG diesel on order cancels it could flood the 'new used' market causing a dramatic drop in used prices.

I'm not sure how much choice you would have as I know on my lease agreement it says you have to comply with recalls etc or something to that effect. But like you I'd be livid and wanting a refund or cancellation option.

It probably doesn't affect Europe though as we all tax and regulate according to MPG and Co2, the US is very focused on NOx emissions which European standards are much looser on.

Is it all of the USA or just California that does a 2-yearly exhaust analysis (smog) test?

If any of the other manufacturers have been up to the same tricks, a good indicator might be if senior figures from those organisations soon decide to 'spend more time with their family'.

I actually wondered how Ford managed to make the 1.25 petrol engine in my 2013 fiesta fall into a lower tax bracket than the exact same engine fitted to the 2012 version.
I even asked the rep if he knew what they'd done, and his response was suitably evasive.

My guess is they've probably all been at it.

It's essentially the same as the official MPG figures we're given, while it might not be as surreptitious, cars ECU's are tuned to give great MPG figures on these tests, then you get them out into the real world and they're nothing like it.
Yet you can have your car chipped or reprogrammed and get better genuine MPG and more performance. It's all geared up towards passing a test, not towards driving, and these small petrol turbos seem to be very bad for it.

Do we know yet when they started doing this?
Does this also mean they have lied about the emissions figures for their cars as well?
