Best Books You have Read

Most of the books I read are biography and history, so my choices are skewed that way:

* Anything by David McCulloch.
* Anything by Ron Chernow.
* Most of James Ellroy's works, though not the most recent ones ("Cold Six Thousand" was the last one I thought was good, those since have been rather poor).
* The Count of Monte Cristo (my absolute favourite).
* "The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the fall of New York" by Robert A. Caro (still reading it - 900 pages down, a few hundred to go). I wish I'd discovered it twenty years ago - it would hopefully have inspired me to go into a different career to the one I eventually chose.
* Edmund Morris's three-part biography of Teddy Roosevelt.
* Jean Edward Smith's biography of FDR.
* David Kynaston's "Tales of a new Jerusalem" series.

I see 2 people have said The count of Monte Cristo is one of their best reads. Looks a big old book. Might have to see if they do an audiobook. Someone recommended using the newer translation as it's a bit easier to handle.

It's an amazing book and very different from the films/TV. The first 100 pages can be hard going, but then it really picks up.

It's not a hard book to read so any version is good, only difference between new version and the old is that in the old version some of the words were changed when translated out of fear of offending victorian values. New version has the "swear" words instead of polite terms

Eg new might say "you must think me a tart"
Old would say "you must think me without morals" little changes like that

Domain (James Herbert) is the only book I've ever read 3 times so I could class that as my best.

Had a bit of a love affair with his books 20 odd years ago.  The Rats, Lair, The Fog.  All just brilliant.

Potter Books were great too in more recent (ish lol) times.

I'm trying to rekindle an interest in reading (recently re-read some of my books from when I was a child (quite famous books way back then i think) and they were still very enjoyable) but I can't seem to take myself off the internet.

Must try harder though

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series is definitely a great read.

I have just nearly finished The Revenant- Michael Punke. Not seen the film but the book is fantastic. Def worth a read...
