When Gordon Brown lost the election in 2010, he had 258 seats, only 3 less than Corbyn now.

Brown though only polled 29% of the National vote, whereas Corbyn managed 40% last night.

Between the Tories and Labour they got 83% of the vote, essentially we are back to two party politics.

The Conservatives are the biggest party and with 43% of the National vote, bigger than Cameron achieved in 2015, and it still seems like a defeat.

Only because the Tories called for a totally unnecessary general election, followed by the usual arrogance.

I hope a lesson has been learnt.

A Tory split is always possible, into Remain and Leave parties, with Leavers merging with UKIP. They've been destroying themselves over Europe for over 25 years now.

That was Paddy Pantsdown's line – or was it some other Lib Dem? – on BBR R4 this morning, as he tried to rescue something from the disaster.

And people have been talking of a split in Labour with Blairites forming a centrist party. It never happened and is less likely now. Neither will happen. No one is going to want to be known for destroying their own party now the battle lines are back to just two parties.

A nice red beret for Theresa with matching marching boots and they will be fine.

One of the main reasons I switched my vote this time.
