I would like David Weir to win it. 4 gold medals at such varying distances (800m, 1500m, 5,000m and marathon) makes his achievements all the more incredible. But I'm realistic enough to know that unfortunately that will never happen. It will probably go to either Farrah or Wiggins, both of whom richly deserve it.

I tweeted last night that I felt slightly sorry for Murray had he got to grand slam finals and won his first grand slam last year he would have walked away with SPOTY. But although he will make the short list I can't see him winning it.

There have been some dubious winners in recent years IMHO but I think I can honestly say that I would probably agree with any of the short list that comes out (providing some horsey type doesn't get nominated).  For me, it's Wiggy vs Murray.

What a year it has been for British sport!!

Nor unfortunately for Ennis had the British public been waiting a 'lifetime' for a heptathlon winner.

We have had over 15 years now of Henman and then Murray being asked 4 times every year "can you win a grand slam" and reminded of Fred Perry.  The publics visibility of that is huge, especially with Wimbledon being one of the UK's biggest sporting events.
With so many athletics gold medal winners over that corresponding period, I just don't think an athlete is going to figure so highly in the public's mind. But it will be close, but even then Farah is hedging it with the Bookies compared to Ennis.

A large part of it will actually be down to the BBC and how much the big up (or down in comparison) each of the contenders in their warm up programmes.  Wrongly or rightly, they could easily make one athletes achievements sound grander and more deserving than anothers.

Just voted in a quick Telegraph early poll.  Was a bit surprised by the vote so far.  Only because the leader (which I voted for) was so far ahead.

Not thought too much about previous years but this year seems incredibly difficult.  I'm guessing when the final 3 are announced, you could easily make a case for any of of them being the winner.

I could easily agree with that

And if he opts to play for Ireland? Undecided

The Olympians will be too hard to chose between, so I'll think they'll all get it for the Team award (both abled and disabled),

That leaves a straight shoot out between McIlroy, Murray and Wiggins (for his TDF win).

Probably Wiggins will get the overall because of his Olympic achievements as well.

Well rightly or wrongly it isn't going to ender him to some folks, who may feel that he has decided he isn't British but Irish.

Though I doubt he will have made that decision this year anyway.

(no prejudice on my part)
