I hate to admit it but I only went to see this because I had seen everything else I wanted to see at the multiplex(I don't like Star Wars). I have not seen much in the press about this film. I was glad that I did go to see this because it was great. One of the important things about it for me was that I have never seen or read the original play so the story came to me fresh. The script was great, funny and profound at the same time, some great lines. I will give no spoilers but will say that the plot requires you to pay attention to what is going on. I did not guess the way the plot was going, but maybe I am stupid. The setting is 1930s Italy,it looks beautiful and is well photographed, the period setting is good with perhaps some dodgy lines, did people really say "make your flight" in 1930. The Italian tourist board should have paid for half this film being made because there are so many great shots of northern Italy looking great. I think you call it production design, the whole look of the film,I loved it,but no sign that Italy was a fascist state at this time, but suppose this was beside the point, would bout have been much of an issue for the people in the film anyway. The acting is great,no bad performances in my opinion. People who are attracted to women will agreed that the 2 female leads are both alluring, people who like men will swoon at the well dressed and rich men. I do not recognise all the actors but they all do a good job. The pace of this film was fine,it held my interest and the plot was complicated enough to keep you watching. If I knew the original story then I might have felt different but I did not so I loved it. This might be what used to be called a women's picture, but I think it will appeal to men as well. Don't wait until the DVD go and see this on the big screen if you can,you will be saving up for a holiday in Italy before the end of the film.
