You aren't comparing like for like though...Try the E-Class E63 estate instead of the entry level diesel, and then still dare to say it isn't fun

The Scorocco (and Golf etc.) should have a screen between the 2 analogue dials (multi functional display or maxidot) which you can set to display the speed as a digital number which would get your issue with analogue dials.

I'm guessing no point getting a diesel Scirocco. I was thinking getting honda type r and saving my money this year for a scirocco next year so I don't take loans etc out but diesal scirrico would be a lot slower.

7k doesn't get you a lot these days it seems unless you don't mind cars over 100k miles and around 13 years old

What you can get depends on your wants/needs and what you like - do you prefer hatchbacks? Would you consider SUVs or saloons?

I, personally, wouldn’t describe a diesel Scirocco as slow. It’s slower 0-62, but in gear it’ll most likely destroy a Type R. It is inherently different though.

The 180/190 diesel sciroco will not be a lot slower than the 2 litre petrol. If looking at the petrol of the age you are looking at do a bit of research around the pretensioners as I think there is a known fault of the design for certain 2 litre petrol engines of that age. There was a modified version made so a lot have been replaced with this that prevents the failure mode (and I believe if the old ones do fail it takes the engine with it) so check this has been done or at least factor in the cost of the work into the purchase price if it has not.

i moved from an fn2 to a 2015 Diesel Scirocco last December.... overall im very happy with it. Rear view is better than the honda to be honest with no spoiler straight across the middle of the screen. boot space is definitely a little less but still suits me and my dog man who's perfectly happy in there. I do feel the Fn was a bit more fun to drive but im sure the Scirocco R would be just as much (i got a GT).

I had the 170 bhp Tdi in my Scirocco mated to the DSG six speed box. Quite a fast little car for a diesel and the mid range torque was fantastic. Now I've got the 184 bhp Tdi in the Golf GTD. Even quicker and is much better with the seven speed DSG. As I've said I prefer the way the Golf handles but I did love the Scirocco and there weren't that many on the road during my ownership.

Seems like the only scirroco I can buy for around 8k are high mileage with many close to 100k miles and costing over 7k. Is that too many miles? I looked at a type r yesterday but the engine paint had all peeled away and few other things put me off made me realise how good condition mine was

My friend's grandson bought a Mk1 Type R a couple of years ago, 120k on the clock and although the car has needed work as you would expect from a 54 reg car the engine has been bullet proof. They are serious fine engines. I absolutely tanked my 1.6 Vti, must have took it to the red line everytime I went out in it just to hear the engine note changes.

However, just like my friend's grandson they are being owned more and more by boy racers and it must be hard to find one that not only has low mileage but one that's also had it's steering and suspension abused. They are not like little old ladies in a Jazz.

I know I'm a Golf owner and I'm on my third performance diesel with DSG but I still think I pick the reliability of the Honda over that of a VW group. I did do 54k from new in my Scirocco that was absolutely trouble free though.

I have seen a few type r which have done around 70k miles and I saw one where the engine was better condition, paint had not gone all flakey and come off like other one I saw
I bought mine when it was 4 years old only 34k on the clock always used v power, took it to main dealer to service etc every year. I do like the inside of the VW scirocco and always wanted one but as you say type r engine is bullet proof and fun to drive. I do prefer hatchback csrs
