It's often conviently forgotten, overlooked or downplayed by some who want to criticise one particular religion using examples that are in fact shared by most - both historically and even in current contemporary societies that to all other extents we consider to be modern and forward thinking in contrast to the developing world.
It's not even overlooked on purpose by many people, it's just that we are conditioned to see the familiar and traditional religions and beliefs of our own cultures in a far more forgiving and respectful light than we are towards those that are new/different.

Hundreds of Muslim students kept home from school that teaches LGBT equality
Parents against LGBT equality being taught in lessons at a Birmingham primary school have boycotted the school.
It's thought hundreds of students have been kept home today over same-sex equality teaching at Anderton Park Primary.
It's the second school in Birmingham where parents have objected to children being taught about LGBT rights and relationships.

Amir Ahmed expressed the view that the school should serve the needs and respect the views of the Muslim 'community' in this area- i.e. his community must be treated differently .
This of course is something which must not be allowed to happen. The UK must not have different rules for ethnic majorities in geographical areas.
