That happens a lot around here, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I used to get a whack across the back of my hand with a serving spoon for not holding a knife correctly

I think people are missing the point.

Being a certain class doesn't define your wealth and your resulting options in life.

Your wealth and the options you take lead to you being in a particular class.

I was born working class. Through education and hard work I'm now middle class. If I win the euromillions and am able to choose to participate in more exclusive things I'll move towards upper class. If I lose my decently paid job and become reliant on benefits I'll move back towards working class.

It's your circumstances that define your class, not the other way round.

It would be interesting to hear your history, as everything you’ve shared so far does suggest the idea that Toko suggested. Not many people can trace their family lineage back to the 1600’s for one

Didn’t I put that up earlier in context of this thread?

Besides everyone has got ancestors, so I have no idea what you are insinuating there. That is just weird.

'Form is temporary, class is permanent'

Sorry mate but you're working class and always will be.

If you're insisting that we still have a class system here in the UK, then you must also accept that you can't change your class simply by moving house or getting a payrise.

You're talking exclusively about wealth, not class.

I find that last point intriguing; what makes you say that would not want to mix in “those circles”.

Apologies, I must have missed that?

I’m not insinuating anything with regards to your ancestors.  My point was that, certainly in the U.K., many working/lower class family lines don’t have documented lineage that far.  My parents traced theirs with a local historian and, once they reached the early to mid-1800’s records were few and far between.  In contrast, families that would traditionally be seen as upper class have much more ancestral documents as those families were considered above everyone else.

You’re probably right.  I guess my point was that from lower classes there is always the idea of moving up (through wealth, position, community standing etc).  From the top there’s nowhere to go and nobody looks downwards.

Being one that has moved through all classified categories I can much more relate to that. Besides category 8 I migrated more than once through all of these categories. And I think that is why I am so struggling with the whole concept and even more so with the suggestion it is the cause of why some people behave like they do.
